First aid measures for eating desiccant

Release Date:2013-11-01  View:1368

At present, many daily necessities such as candy, biscuits or household appliances may be packaged with desiccants in order to extend their life. Occasionally, some people are careless when eating and accidentally drie the desiccant. Sometimes it's the kids at home who are curious enough to put them in their mouths and chew them, and then the parents are upset. So, how should we deal with the wrong food desiccant?
There are four kinds of driers on the market today: iron oxide, silica gel, and the other two are white powder, one is calcium oxide, the other is calcium chloride.
Ferric oxide and coffee, the desiccant is less irritating. Let the mistake eater drink more water dilution is OK, unless the patient takes more, appeared nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, it is necessary to consider the possibility of iron poisoning, must be quickly treated.
Silica gel is a commonly used desiccant, which is translucent and granular. Because this material has porous structure, the adsorption area is large, and it can adsorb many kinds of substances. The color of silica gel is added cobaltous chloride to indicate efficacy. Cobaltous chloride is blue when it is anhydrous and becomes pink after water absorption. Silica gel can not be absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, and can be excreted by feces. It is not toxic to human body. Therefore, it is not necessary to make special treatment after taking this desiccant.
Calcium oxide is commonly referred to as quicklime, is a white or gray-white lump, has a strong absorption of moisture in the air function, more used as food, clothing, precision instrument drying agent. After absorption of water, it becomes powdered calcium hydroxide, known as hydrated lime. So as long as it becomes powder, there is no drying effect. If you take this desiccant by mistake, calcium oxide will burn the wound cavity or esophagus because it releases heat in the process of turning into calcium hydroxide in water. At the same time, calcium hydroxide is alkaline and corrosive to the oropharynx and esophagus, such as splashing into the eye can cause conjunctival and corneal damage.
For those who take this desiccant by mistake, do not vomit. Take milk or water immediately. Adults usually take 120-240 ml. Children usually take 10 ml per kg of body weight, but the total amount should be less than 200 ml. Excessive drinking water can induce vomiting.
At the same time, be careful not to neutralize with any acids, because the heat released by the neutralization reaction can aggravate the damage. If a desiccant splashes into the eyes, wash with water and saline from the nose to the ear as soon as possible, rinse for at least 15 minutes, and then send to the hospital. If the skin is contaminated, it should be washed with plenty of water. Severe cases can be treated by chemical burns.
Calcium chloride is also often used as a desiccant, anhydrous state for white crystals, mostly granular, massive or flaky, strong water absorption, after water into liquid. Do not make food desiccant, mostly for larger space dehumidification. The treatment after contact is similar to that of Cao.
Be careful:
Ferric oxide, calcium chloride and calcium oxide should be diluted by drinking water at home. The amount of drinking water should be 1-2 ml per kilogram of the weight of the people who eat by mistake. Particularly, it should not be excessive to drink water for the patients with calcium oxide poisoning, so as to avoid vomiting and to make the esophagus burn again when refluxing.
